“We have to pay attention to how our platforms are making us feel — how they’re making our communities feel — and examine our individual threshold within which it still feels worth it. (Your threshold may come tomorrow. Maybe it already has.)” had me saying YES YES YES! For a long time I have wanted to leave Facebook as much as it provides community referrals but I find it just a place to bicker, complain, argue and direct conversation one way!
My conundrum - I reached my threshold a while ago but how do I leave! I’m ready to find my community outside of this…
I so get that!! I'd say start slow with an exit strategy, dipping your toes into spaces that feel good at first, to get comfortable, and then shift your energy from the *not aligned* place to the *more aligned* place until suddenly you realize the other space isn't necessary at all. You could also just stop cold turkey and put up a link to "find me at" wherever else you want to go. Personally when I bailed on TikTok (I wrote about it here: https://xantheappleyard.substack.com/p/hate-mail-for-tiktok) I just literally deleted it and that was that 😂 but it wasn't a major lead generator for me so I wasn't as worried about whether folks would be looking for me
Great insight, Xanthe, I previously left Facebook and after 5 years I came back for my business and to form a community. The tags are good but the conversations are the same and the same people in the same circles too. Not much has changed. Sometimes cold turkey is best!!
THISS!!!! I was thinking to myself yesterday "I do not want to live in FEAR of leaving a social media platform". They have scared us into thinking our success will die if we leave. But baby. there are other ways to fly. xx
The call for mass disillusionment is urgent in a lot of our life’s dimensions and at least this array of events has made that more obvious for us. I enjoyed your take a lot! I left threads because Substack does the thing for me but I am not ready to leave insta just yet.
I wonder how many neocoins I have left on my account - the internet’s pinnacle was def neopets!
I couldn't agree more re: mass disillusionment of the world as a whole! I'm so grateful you took the time to read (and love that we share a Neopets past hahaha)
Posted about this today myself, fittingly on my first ever substack, as I diversify and then promptly shared it on Instagram. 🤣 this is deep on my mind lately and I appreciated your perspective! I’m not throwing the water out with the baby yet but finding community in other places and trying on pants that don’t require pointing, dancing or any of the other things we did to be seen, feels good!
ahaha the substack shared to IG is so real, thank you for taking the time to reflect on this!!! as much as the circumstances are dark, it's exciting to be encouraged to explore new mediums and find spaces that fit better (and maybe always would have)
